March recap with the Interim Commissioner

Commissioner's Corner

Last week marked the end of fiscal year 2017-2018 and I would like to thank you all for your hard work and dedication.

On March 8, we celebrated International Women’s Day and the contributions of all the women who work for CSC. This was an important day to recognize our staff’s achievements and contributions to public safety while acknowledging the challenges women continue to face in the field of corrections. I recently had the chance to speak about my career as a woman in corrections and I invite you to read about it in Let’s Talk Express.

On March 16, Minister LeBlanc, on behalf of Minister Goodale, announced that CSC will undertake a study to create a Health Centre of Excellence at Shepody Healing Centre in Dorchester, New Brunswick. We issued a news release that provides more information about this important initiative.

CSC marked International Day of Happiness for the first time on May 20, which has been celebrated by the United Nations for the past five years. Our work holds an important place in our lives, and we operate in an environment that comes with considerable daily challenges. We need to seize every opportunity to spread happiness in our work environment and celebrate successes. You are the reason that we are able to “change lives and protect Canadians.” It gave me great pleasure to read the Let’s Talk Express article on what makes CSC employees from across the country happy. It is well worth the read!

Last week, I met with EXCOM to discuss the results of the Public Service Employee Survey (PSES) and how we can improve them – particularly in areas relating to a healthy and respectful workplace. We are committed to following up on the results and will communicate these ongoing efforts with you. Thank you to all those who participated in this year’s PSES survey.

As we continue our efforts to improve our workplace environment, we should not lose sight of the fact that together, we are producing some excellent results. Not a day goes by where I don’t hear about an employee or an initiative that is truly making a difference.  Let’s be proud of what we accomplish each day!

The Office of Conflict Management (OCM) is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. They work in close collaboration with key partners and all employees to foster a healthy workplace through awareness, workshops and a variety of conflict management services aimed at improving relationships. The OCM has assisted employees at all levels in resolving hundreds of conflicts throughout the organization. Should you encounter conflict in the workplace, I invite you to contact the OCM at the onset to explore options. Visit the OCM Hub page for further information about their services and initiatives.

I look forward to meeting more of you and continuing to work together throughout the upcoming fiscal year.
