In December 2015, CSC officially opened its new Training Academy at the RCMP Academy Depot Division in Regina, Saskatchewan. The Academy is a state-of-the-art facility where new recruits can learn the competencies needed to work in corrections, as well as the importance of upholding CSC’s standards marked by professionalism and excellence. The Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, joined CSC Commissioner Don Head at the festivities that included a ribbon cutting ceremony and tour of the facility.
Recruits who attend the Training Academy experience the best of the best when it comes to training for their new position in corrections and being prepared for their first days on the job. Here’s what the facility has to offer:
- two floors that include minimum-, medium,- and maximum-security simulation areas featuring cells, principal entrances, an inmate yard, classrooms, offices, and a physical training area for staff
- hands-on experience using state of the art equipment such as metal detectors, x-ray machines, and electronic door systems
Making this a reality was a case study in the importance of partnerships. CSC signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding with the RCMP to move into this new Academy that can host up to 96 CSC recruits and 20 staff. As a result of their efforts, CSC and the RCMP were awarded the 2015 Real Property Institute of Canada Partnership Award. The award is presented annually in recognition of those who have engaged and promoted in partnerships of real property resulting in efficiencies and effectiveness.
We look forward to welcoming many new recruits to the Training Academy over the coming years!
